Never doubt Real Madrid on a European night.

Leading up to Wednesday’s highly anticipated Champions League Round of 16 clash, the media narrative was largely writing off Los Blancos. Injuries to key galacticos and a shaky run of domestic form had many pundits predicting a comfortable Manchester City victory at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Instead, Álvaro Arbeloa’s men delivered a tactical masterclass, securing a resounding 3-0 victory driven by a stunning first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who played a vital role in silencing the critics, perfectly summed up the dressing room’s mentality following the statement win.

Silencing the Noise

Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, the right-back admitted the squad heard the pre-match doubts loud and clear.

“[There was] a lot of noise when the draw happened and leading up to this game,” Alexander-Arnold said. “Especially with how we’ve been playing the last few games, and the results we’ve had. A lot of people just expected us to get battered tonight.”

Madrid stepped onto the pitch missing a staggering amount of star power. Without Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Éder Militão, Rodrygo, and David Alaba, Arbeloa had to rely on squad depth and flawless tactical execution.

“We showed the mentality,” Alexander-Arnold emphasized. “It doesn’t matter what injuries you’ve got, what players are out. This competition means a lot to the club and us as players understand that… We executed the gameplan perfectly in the first half.”

Valverde Shines, Madrid Look to Manchester

Fede Valverde was the undisputed star of the evening, dismantling City’s defense with his brilliant treble. While Vinícius Júnior uncharacteristically missed a second-half penalty to extend the lead even further, a 3-0 cushion gives Madrid a massive advantage heading into next week’s second leg at the Etihad.

Despite trailing Barcelona in LaLiga and enduring a bumpy league phase in Europe, Alexander-Arnold reminded everyone why Real Madrid remains the ultimate heavyweight in knockout football.

“People will say that they’re favourites, and going off results and the way both teams have been playing, it could have been true. But when you get to knockout football in the Champions League, anyone can beat anyone… We scored our goals very, very ruthlessly.”

When the lights shine brightest, the Kings of Europe step up. “When there’s so much hype around a game and so many eyes on it, as a player you know you need to perform,” Alexander-Arnold concluded. “Especially when you play for a club like this, there are no excuses, you have to win.”
