José Mourinho had a clear favourite in mind when it came to reinforcing Real Madrid’s midfield this summer — and that man was Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández. That’s according to Real Madrid insider Mario Cortegana, writing for The Athletic, who states plainly: “Mourinho’s favourite option was Enzo Fernandez, despite club sources denying it.”
Why the Deal Never Happened
Despite the Argentine international being heavily linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabéu throughout the transfer window, Los Blancos ultimately refused to meet Chelsea’s asking price. Enzo Fernández, 25, has since made his move elsewhere, joining Manchester City under manager Enzo Maresca.
What It Means for Real Madrid
Reports had suggested that those in power at the club were looking for a specific profile to strengthen the engine room, with Fernández emerging as a leading candidate. In the end, the financial demands proved a bridge too far, leaving Mourinho without his preferred midfield addition heading into the new season.
