Real Madrid Takes a Stand: Official Evidence Submitted to UEFA Over Vini Jr. Racism Incident

The fight to protect our star continues. Real Madrid has officially stepped up its defense of Vinícius Júnior, confirming on Thursday that the club has submitted “all available evidence” to UEFA regarding the unacceptable racist abuse he suffered during Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Benfica.

The Incident in Lisbon

Tuesday’s crucial first-leg knockout tie at the Estádio da Luz was overshadowed by a deeply disturbing incident. The match was halted for 10 minutes after Vini Jr. alerted the referee that Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni had called him a “monkey” during a heated confrontation.

The altercation occurred shortly after Vini Jr celebrated his brilliant match-winning goal by dancing in front of the home supporters. Notably, footage shows Prestianni covering his mouth during the exchange with our Brazilian winger—a tactic often used by players to hide their words from lip-readers and cameras. Prestianni has denied the allegation.+1

Real Madrid and the Football World Stand with Vini Jr

While Vinícius has tragically been the target of repeated racist abuse since arriving in Spain in 2018, the swift backing from his teammates and the club on Tuesday was a powerful statement of unity.

Real Madrid released a firm official statement confirming their cooperation with the UEFA investigation:

“Real Madrid has submitted all available evidence to UEFA regarding the incidents during the Benfica game, which witnessed unacceptable episodes of racism… Real Madrid appreciates the unanimous support, backing, and affection that our player Vini Jr. has received from all areas of the global football community.”

UEFA announced on Wednesday that they have opened an official investigation into the “allegations of discriminatory behaviour.”

Benfica and Mourinho Deflect

In stark contrast to the solidarity shown by the global football community, Benfica’s response has been defensive. The Portuguese club issued a statement backing Prestianni and claiming he is the victim of a “defamation campaign.” Meanwhile, their manager, former Madrid boss José Mourinho, chose to focus on and question Vinícius’s goal celebration rather than condemning the alleged racist abuse.

As the UEFA probe unfolds, the message from the Bernabéu remains crystal clear: Estamos contigo, Vini. (We are with you, Vini).
