It feels like a broken record, but the medical ward at Valdebebas is overflowing once again. Just as we look to bounce back and reclaim the La Liga crown, the squad is being stretched to its absolute limits. Recent dropped points against Osasuna and Getafe have turned every remaining fixture into a must-win, but ahead of our crucial clash against Celta Vigo, Álvaro Arbeloa faces an absolute nightmare in defense.
According to a recent report from Melchor Ruiz, we might be heading into Friday’s match with exactly one recognized, fully-fit center-back.
The Casualty List: How Did We Get Here?
The sheer volume of absences in the heart of our defense is staggering. Here is the current state of our center-back rotation heading into Friday:
- Éder Militão: Out (Injured)
- Raúl Asencio: Out (Injured)
- Dean Huijsen: Out (Suspended)
- Álvaro Carreras: Out (Suspended)
- David Alaba: Doubtful (Discomfort, pending medical tests)
As if our attacking injuries weren’t frustrating enough, the backline has been completely decimated. We’ve been leaking goals far too easily lately, and completely dismantling the chemistry of the defense match after match is a massive roadblock to fixing it.
Rüdiger: The Last Man Standing
By process of elimination, 33-year-old Antonio Rüdiger is the only natural center-back guaranteed to be available. He will once again have to be the undisputed general and leading force of a makeshift backline.
The silver lining? Our flanks are fully stocked. Arbeloa has Trent Alexander-Arnold ready to lock down the right-back spot, while Ferland Mendy and Fran García are both fit and available on the left. But the massive question mark remains: who plays next to Rüdiger?
Arbeloa’s Dilemma: Experience vs. Youth
Arbeloa has to make a massive tactical decision, and he essentially has two routes he can take:
1. The Emergency Veterans We’ve seen Carlo Ancelotti do it in the past, and Arbeloa might have to replicate the strategy: dropping Aurélien Tchouaméni back into the center of defense, or sliding Dani Carvajal over to play as an undersized but experienced center-half. It’s a patchwork fix, but it puts trusted senior players on the pitch.
2. Unleashing Joan Martínez Could this finally be the moment for the 18-year-old Castilla sensation? Martínez dazzled everyone during the preseason, earning early (and heavy) comparisons to a young Sergio Ramos. He has yet to make his official senior debut for Los Blancos, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Throwing an 18-year-old into a must-win La Liga revenge match—after we lost to Celta back in December—is a massive gamble, but it might be exactly the spark of youthful fearlessness this squad needs right now.
It’s going to be an uphill battle on Friday, and frankly, anything less than three points is unacceptable if we want to catch up in the title race. Let’s hope whoever steps up to partner Rüdiger is ready for a war.
