Let’s be honest, Madridistas—we all felt this coming. Death, taxes, and Real Madrid facing Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

Following Friday’s draw in Nyon, the script writers have delivered once again. Los Blancos will face Pep Guardiola’s side in the Round of 16, marking the sixth time in the last seven seasons that these two European heavyweights will cross paths. It has officially become the defining modern rivalry of the Champions League.
Here is everything you need to know about the draw, the dates, and our potential path to European glory in Budapest.
The Matchup Details
Because City secured direct qualification by finishing 8th in the league phase, they earned the right to host the second leg. That means the tie will kick off under the lights of the Santiago Bernabéu before we head to Manchester to finish the job.
- First Leg (Santiago Bernabéu): 10/11 March 2026
- Second Leg (Etihad Stadium): 17/18 March 2026
We arrive at this stage after finishing 9th in the new league phase and comfortably handling Benfica with a 3-1 aggregate victory in the play-off round. City, meanwhile, finished just one point ahead of us with 16 points from their eight matches.
A Perfectly Balanced Rivalry
There is absolutely nothing separating these two sides historically. The margins are razor-thin, and the history is legendary. Over our 15 total meetings in European competition, the record is completely deadlocked:
| Stat | Real Madrid | Manchester City |
| Wins | 5 | 5 |
| Draws | 5 | 5 |
| Goals Scored | 25 | 26 |
City might have edged us by a single goal in the aggregate history books, but as we know better than anyone: the Champions League is Real Madrid’s competition.
The Road to Budapest
UEFA didn’t just draw the Round of 16; they mapped out the entire bracket. If we can conquer City, the road to the May 30th final in Budapest is set, and it won’t be easy.
- Quarter-finals (7/8 & 14/15 April): The winner of our tie will face either Atalanta or Bayern Munich.
- Semi-finals (28/29 April & 5/6 May): Survive the quarters, and we will face one of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Galatasaray, or Liverpool.
We are on the tougher side of the bracket, but to be the best, you have to beat the best. The other side of the draw features Atletico Madrid, Spurs, Barcelona, Newcastle, Arsenal, Leverkusen, Bodo/Glimt, and Sporting CP.
