Real Madrid fans were already counting down the days to Saturday’s La Liga return against Villarreal — but there’s an unwelcome cloud hanging over the build-up. Federico Valverde, one of the heartbeats of the Madrid midfield, has been officially declared a doubt for the fixture by José Mourinho himself.
What Happened
The 28-year-old Uruguayan picked up an ankle injury during last month’s Madrid derby defeat to Atlético, after taking a heavy challenge from Lee Kang-in. Tests carried out at Real’s training complex in Valdebebas confirmed the ankle problem, and Valverde was subsequently ruled out of international duty with Uruguay during the recent break.
Encouragingly, Valverde had been spotted back on the grass in recent days, taking part in group training sessions — a sight that gave Madridistas genuine hope he’d be fit to start from the off against Villarreal. But any optimism was tempered on Friday when Mourinho faced the media ahead of the game. The manager was direct: “Fede Valverde is a doubt for tomorrow.” Short, sharp, and not exactly what supporters wanted to hear.
What It Means for Real Madrid
Valverde’s importance to this Real Madrid side can scarcely be overstated. Over the past few seasons he has evolved from a high-energy box-to-box runner into one of the most complete midfielders in world football — equally comfortable pressing, carrying the ball forward, contributing defensively, and chipping in with goals. Losing him, even temporarily, is a genuine blow to a side that was already stung by the derby defeat before the international break.
That loss to Atlético would have hurt, and the last thing Mourinho’s squad needs is to head into a tricky away-day atmosphere at Villarreal without one of their most dynamic players. Villarreal are no pushovers — the Yellow Submarine have a long history of making life uncomfortable for the big clubs, and their home support at Estadio de la Cerámica makes the Estadio de la Cerámica one of La Liga’s trickier venues to visit.
From a tactical perspective, Mourinho will need to think carefully about how he configures his midfield if Valverde is unable to go from the start. The Uruguayan’s ability to cover vast amounts of ground and link defence with attack is not easily replicated, and whoever steps in will need to be on top of their game. Options exist within the squad, but Valverde’s specific blend of physicality and technical quality is unique.
There’s also a fitness management angle to consider. Mourinho may well decide that — even if Valverde is declared available — easing him back from the bench rather than risking a full 90 minutes is the more sensible call. Ankle injuries can linger if not fully resolved, and with a long season still stretching out ahead, the last thing Real need is a recurrence that sidelines him for an extended spell.
What’s Next
All eyes will be on the official matchday squad announcement and any late fitness updates before kick-off on Saturday. If Valverde does miss out, Madrid’s midfield depth will be tested from the very first match back after the international break — a test nobody at the club wanted quite so soon.
For the Madridista faithful, the hope is simple: that Fede is fit enough to at least make the squad, that Madrid get back to winning ways against Villarreal, and that the ankle issue is firmly in the rearview mirror as quickly as possible.
