Trent Frustrated at Real Madrid as PL Giants Circle

It hasn’t been the fairytale Madrid move Trent Alexander-Arnold and the Bernabéu faithful were hoping for — and now, according to reports, three of England’s biggest clubs are watching the situation very closely indeed.

What’s Going On

Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool are all monitoring the 28-year-old’s position at Real Madrid, with TEAMtalk reporting that Alexander-Arnold is beginning to take stock of his future amid limited game time under José Mourinho. The report stresses that the England international remains happy in the Spanish capital on a personal level, but growing frustration over a lack of involvement is real — and serious enough that a return to the Premier League is now a genuine possibility being discussed.

The numbers tell a difficult story. Since arriving from Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2025, Alexander-Arnold has never truly nailed down a starting spot. Last season, fitness problems were the main culprit, restricting him to 1,794 minutes across 30 appearances — contributing five assists but never hitting the consistent heights that made him one of the best right-backs in world football during his Anfield years. This season, he’s been fit, but that hasn’t translated into regular starts. Just 344 minutes across six appearances in all competitions, with a single assist to show for it. For a player of his calibre and ambition, that is nowhere near enough.

Crucially, Real Madrid are said to be reluctant to sanction a mid-season departure, and Alexander-Arnold himself reportedly remains committed to making it work at the Bernabéu. But the noises coming out suggest that commitment is being tested.

Why Each Club Is Interested

The interest from three separate Premier League heavyweights underlines just how highly Alexander-Arnold is still rated back in England, even after a difficult 18 months in Madrid.

Chelsea’s attraction makes the most immediate sense. Malo Gusto’s future at Stamford Bridge is reportedly uncertain, and while Pedro Neto has filled in effectively at right wing-back, he is not a natural in the role. Alexander-Arnold — who has spent his entire career combining defensive duties with an extraordinary output from deep — would be a far more organic fit in the system.

Arsenal’s interest might raise a few eyebrows at first glance, given that Mikel Arteta has Ben White, Jurrien Timber, and Ezri Konsa available at right-back. But the Gunners have reportedly been scouring the market for a specialist in that position regardless, with Ivan Fresneda’s name previously linked before it emerged he may sign a new deal with Sporting CP. Trent’s ability to function as a genuine creator from right-back — racking up assists and chances created at a rate most midfielders would envy — would add something qualitatively different to what Arteta currently has at his disposal.

As for Liverpool, the subplot here writes itself. Conor Bradley’s absence has left Andoni Iraola short of options on the right side, with Jeremie Frimpong — signed to be the first-choice solution — having been inconsistent since his arrival. Iraola has even had to deploy Ronald Araujo in the role as a workaround. The idea of Alexander-Arnold returning to Anfield, the club where he became a legend, would be one of the transfer stories of the decade — though the complexities there are obvious.

What It Means for Real Madrid

From a Madridista perspective, this is a story worth watching closely — not least because it raises genuine questions about how Mourinho is managing his squad. Alexander-Arnold is not a fringe player by any reasonable measure; he is an elite-level footballer who can change games from right-back or a deeper midfield role, and having him idle on the bench or in the stands for stretches of the season feels like a waste of a valuable asset.

Real Madrid’s reluctance to sell in January suggests the club still sees him as part of the plan — and, to be fair, a full season with consistent minutes might look very different to the stop-start experience he’s had so far. José Mourinho’s squad management has never been the most universally loved aspect of his management, and it wouldn’t be the first time a player has had to fight their way into his good graces before becoming indispensable.

For supporters, the hope will be that Alexander-Arnold gets his opportunity in the coming weeks and grabs it. The talent is undeniable. The platform is the greatest in world football. The last thing any Real Madrid fan wants is to see a top-quality England international head back across the Channel because he couldn’t get a regular game at the Bernabéu. The next few months could be defining ones for his Madrid career.
