Rüdiger ‘more likely to leave’ Real Madrid next summer

Rüdiger 'more likely to leave' Real Madrid next summer

The Antonio Rüdiger era at Real Madrid could be drawing to a close. According to Blancos insider Jorge C Picon, speaking on the YouTube channel of Inaki Angulo this week, the experienced German centre-back is currently considered more likely to depart the Santiago Bernabéu than extend his stay beyond next summer. With Rüdiger’s contract set to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season, the clock is ticking — and the signs from inside the club are not encouraging for those hoping he stays.

Frozen Out at the Back

The numbers tell a pretty stark story. Despite Real Madrid having played eight competitive fixtures already this season, Rüdiger has started just two of them. That is a bit-part role by anyone’s standards, let alone for a player of his experience and profile. The reason? He currently sits third in the central defensive pecking order under new head coach José Mourinho, behind both Dean Huijsen and Ibrahima Konaté.

And things could get harder still. Éder Militão is working his way back to full fitness, and once the Brazilian is available again, Rüdiger’s path to regular first-team football looks even more congested. With four quality central defenders ahead of or level with him in Mourinho’s considerations, getting meaningful minutes will be a serious challenge for the 33-year-old going forward.

Beyond the selection hierarchy, there are also reported concerns internally about whether Rüdiger’s defensive performances are at the same level they were during his earlier years in Madrid. Whether that is a reflection of age, reduced match sharpness from lack of game time, or something else entirely, those doubts appear to be feeding into the club’s thinking about his long-term future.

What It Means for Real Madrid

From a squad-planning perspective, this development — if it plays out as Picon suggests — would represent a significant moment. Rüdiger has been one of Real Madrid’s most committed and vocal leaders at the back since arriving on a free transfer from Chelsea back in 2022. His physical presence, aggression, and ability to organise a defensive line brought a certain edge to the Bernabéu backline, and he became a fan favourite for his passion as much as his performances.

But football moves fast, and Florentino Pérez has never been shy about reshaping the squad when the time comes. If the club does allow Rüdiger’s contract to run down and part ways in the summer of 2027, it would likely signal confidence in the current generation of central defenders — particularly Huijsen, who has emerged as a highly-rated prospect, and Konaté, who brings elite physicality and Champions League pedigree of his own.

The Militão factor is also worth watching. His fitness and form upon return could accelerate the timeline of Rüdiger’s reduced relevance, or — if he struggles to recapture his best level post-injury — perhaps delay it. Either way, the logjam at centre-back is very real.

What’s Next for Rüdiger?

At 33 (turning 34 in March 2027), Rüdiger will still be attractive to clubs at the top level, particularly those who value experience, leadership, and physical defending. A return to the Bundesliga would not be a surprise, and there will likely be suitors from the Premier League and elsewhere if he becomes available on a pre-contract agreement from January 2027 onwards.

For Madridistas, this is a bittersweet development. Nobody wants to see a warrior like Rüdiger pushed out the door, and many will hope he finds a way to fight back into contention under Mourinho. But with contract talks seemingly not a priority for the club right now, the reality appears to be that his time in white is winding down. Enjoy him while he’s here — because if the insiders are right, the summer of 2027 could mark the end of a memorable chapter.
