José Mourinho is giving nothing away. Ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League showdown with RB Leipzig on Wednesday, the Blancos boss has confirmed that winger Yan Diomandé himself hasn’t even been told whether he’ll be in the starting XI — and Mourinho isn’t planning to let anyone else in on the secret either.
What Happened
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Mourinho was naturally asked about Diomandé’s role in the upcoming European tie, given the Ivorian attacker’s stunning weekend display. The Portuguese tactician was characteristically tight-lipped, offering only this: “Yan Diomandé’s role tomorrow? He doesn’t know if he will play or not. The only thing I can say for tomorrow is that Vini will start on the left wing.”
So there you have it — Vinicius Jr. is locked in on the left flank, and everything else is, for now, Mourinho’s little secret. Classic Special One press conference behaviour, and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
The question is very much worth asking, though, because Diomandé has been in seriously impressive form. In Saturday’s 4-1 La Liga demolition of Sevilla, the summer signing delivered a goal and an assist, lighting up the Bernabéu and continuing what has become a real hot streak of form. It wasn’t all plain sailing when he first arrived in Madrid — the initial adaptation period was slow, and there were inevitable questions about whether the fee and the hype were justified. But in recent weeks, Diomandé has been answering those questions emphatically, and the fanbase is well and truly on board.
What It Means for Real Madrid
Mourinho’s decision to keep Diomandé in the dark is probably more tactical gamesmanship than genuine indecision. Managing a squad that’s competing on multiple fronts — La Liga, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey — requires rotation, and Mourinho has always been a manager who prioritises freshness and tactical surprise in European knockout rounds. Keeping Leipzig’s analysts guessing about the attacking lineup is very much part of the game plan.
What’s clear is that Diomandé has made himself impossible to ignore for selection. A goal and an assist against Sevilla in a convincing league win is the kind of form that forces a manager’s hand, regardless of whether it’s a domestic or European fixture. If Mourinho does opt to rest him — perhaps starting a more defensively disciplined attacker against a Leipzig side known for their high-energy pressing system — then it will be a pragmatic choice, not a form-based one.
From a broader squad perspective, the emergence of Diomandé as a genuine attacking weapon gives Real Madrid serious depth and unpredictability in the final third. Vinicius Jr. is confirmed to start on the left, which means one of the most dangerous wingers in Europe is already in the lineup. If Diomandé comes in alongside or in support of Vini, Leipzig will have their hands full dealing with pace and directness on multiple channels.
What’s Next
Wednesday’s Champions League match against RB Leipzig is the immediate focus, and it’s a fixture that carries real weight. European nights at the Bernabéu — or away in Germany, depending on the venue — always demand a strong performance, and the squad will be expected to carry the momentum of that Sevilla win into the continental stage.
For Diomandé personally, this is a significant moment in his Real Madrid story. After a slow start, he’s now squarely in Mourinho’s plans and seemingly knocking on the door for a consistent starting role. Whether Wednesday represents another chapter in that breakthrough, or whether Mourinho tucks him away for later in the tie, the Ivory Coast winger has gone from question mark to genuine talking point in a very short space of time.
Keep an eye on the confirmed lineup when it drops — because right now, even Diomandé doesn’t know what it’s going to say.
