The sweeping squad overhaul under José Mourinho has claimed its next high-profile casualty. According to an explicit report from The Athletic, French international left-back Ferland Mendy has been officially informed that he is completely excluded from the manager’s tactical plans for the upcoming campaign.
Mourinho has reportedly requested a highly dynamic, versatile left-back profile capable of tucked-in central defensive coverage to anchor his preferred 4-2-3-1 setup. With Mendy failing to fit that vision and struggling heavily for fitness, the Real Madrid management have actively placed the 31-year-old on the summer transfer block.
The decision arrives immediately on the heels of the club finalising a marquee defensive acquisition, having secured Marc Cucurella (27) from Chelsea in a package worth up to €60 million to serve as the team’s immediate starter.
The Fitness Crisis: A Difficult Campaign
Mendy’s slide down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabéu is the direct result of a recurring, agonizing struggle with physical durability. The numbers behind his recent campaign paint a clear picture of a player unable to sustain a run in the first team:
- Total 2025–26 Appearances: Just 9 competitive appearances across all competitions, including a meager 5 starts in La Liga.
- The Current Roadblock: Mendy is currently sidelined with a severe tendon rupture, with medical staff projecting he will remain completely out of action until November.
- The Contract Conundrum: Tied to the club until June 2032 following previous renewals, his massive wage packet and long-term security present a significant obstacle to an easy summer exit.
The Cucurella Influx and the Stalled Market
While shifting Mendy is the board’s clear objective, finding a European suitor willing to take on a sidelined player with a history of physical setbacks is proving to be an immense challenge. Potential buyers are well aware of his medical record, meaning a loan deal with a subsidized wage structure may be the club’s only realistic pathway out.
RMxtra Verdict: A Necessary, Ruthless Departure
Football under José Mourinho is entirely defined by absolute reliability and immediate execution. As elite as Ferland Mendy has been during our historic Champions League nights over the years, his inability to guarantee physical availability has made him a luxury the club can no longer afford to carry.
Placing him on the market is a cold business decision, but it clears the path entirely for Cucurella to claim the flank.
