In a development that could significantly alter Real Madrid’s summer transfer strategy, Endrick has publicly expressed his desire to extend his stay with Olympique Lyonnais. Speaking after Lyon’s pivotal victory over Stade Rennais, the 19-year-old Brazilian sensation credited the French club for his career resurgence.
Endrick joined Lyon on a short-term loan in January after struggling for consistent minutes under the rotating management at the Bernabéu. Since moving to Ligue 1, he has been nothing short of transformative.
The “Fonseca Effect”: Endrick’s Stats in France
Under the guidance of fellow Lusophone Paulo Fonseca, Endrick has evolved from a frustrated bench option into one of Europe’s most productive young forwards.
- Appearances: 19
- Goals: 8 (Including his first professional hat-trick)
- Assists: 7
- Impact: He has single-handedly put Lyon on the verge of Champions League qualification, a feat that seemed unlikely before his arrival.
The Quotes: A Preference for Lyon?
Despite the long-standing expectation that he would return to Madrid this June to compete with Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, Endrick’s latest comments suggest he values playing time and the “perfect conditions” he has found in France.
“If I must go back to Real Madrid, I will; if I must extend here, I will extend here. I would like to stay here. They do everything to put me in the perfect conditions [to perform].”
The Dilemma for Florentino Pérez
This puts the Real Madrid board in a complex position. The club had reportedly been planning to offload academy graduate Gonzalo García (who is being chased by Borussia Dortmund and Juventus) specifically to make room for Endrick’s return.
- Option A: The Forced Return. Madrid brings Endrick back to serve as a high-end rotation piece. However, with Mbappé, Vini Jr., and Rodrygo (when fit) in the squad, his minutes might drop again, potentially stalling his momentum.
- Option B: The Extended Loan. Madrid allows him another season at Lyon to play Champions League football as a guaranteed starter. This would likely mean the club would have to reconsider the sale of Gonzalo García or dip into the market for a temporary backup striker.
RMxtra Verdict: Priority Must Be Growth
Endrick is finally showing the world the “Palmeiras version” of himself—explosive, clinical, and confident. While Madridistas are desperate to see him in the white shirt, bringing him back only to sit on the bench could be a mistake. If Alvaro Arbeloa (or a potential successor like José Mourinho) cannot guarantee him significant starts, a loan extension at a UCL-level Lyon might actually be the smartest long-term move for his development.
