Rodri: Real Madrid ‘came with everything’ to sign me

Rodri: Real Madrid 'came with everything' to sign me

It’s the transfer saga that gripped Spanish football all summer — and now, straight from the horse’s mouth, we know just how close Real Madrid came to pulling off one of the biggest signings of the year. Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has openly admitted that Los Blancos made his final decision an incredibly difficult one, revealing that the club went all-in to bring him to the Santiago Bernabéu before he ultimately chose Barcelona.

What Rodri Actually Said

Speaking in an interview with COPE, as cited by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the 30-year-old midfielder didn’t hold back when reflecting on the summer’s most talked-about courtship. “Real Madrid really tried hard. They wanted to sign me, we had direct talks and they came with everything they had to make it happen. They made my decision difficult. I am grateful,” Rodri said. When asked whether those conversations went as far as sitting down with club president Florentino Pérez, the Spaniard was coy but telling: “Speaking with Florentino Pérez too? I am not gonna say that.”

That non-denial speaks volumes. This wasn’t a casual flirtation — Real Madrid were seriously in the race, and by Rodri’s own account, they left nothing on the table trying to get him through the door at Valdebebas.

The background here is well-documented. Once Rodri made clear his desire to leave Manchester City this past summer, Real Madrid were initially considered the frontrunners. The Bernabéu has long been the dream destination for elite Spanish talent, and a central midfielder of Rodri’s calibre — World Cup winner, Champions League winner, Ballon d’Or holder — would have been an instant statement signing. In the end, though, it was Hansi Flick’s vision at Barcelona that tipped the scales. Rodri concluded that the German coach’s system was better suited to his style of play than what José Mourinho’s Real Madrid project could offer.

What It Means for Real Madrid

From a Madridista perspective, this one stings — but perhaps not as badly as it might have a year ago. Missing out on the best defensive midfielder in the world is never something to celebrate, but the manner of the miss is important context. Real Madrid didn’t lose Rodri because they didn’t try. They didn’t lose him to a richer club or a more glamorous project. They lost him on personal preference, which is a very different conversation.

It does, however, raise genuine questions about the midfield rebuild that Mourinho is overseeing. The Bernabéu faithful know better than anyone that the squad is in a transitional phase. Luka Modrić’s era has drawn to a close, and while there is young talent coming through, landing a ready-made, elite-level defensive midfielder who can dictate tempo and control games would have been transformative. Rodri, at 30, is right in the prime years of his career — experienced enough to lead, young enough to have four or five peak seasons ahead of him.

Whether Real Madrid have an adequate alternative already in the squad, or whether another window will be needed to address that specific need, remains one of the defining questions of Mourinho’s project in Madrid. Supporters will be watching closely to see how the midfield copes as the season deepens and the competition on multiple fronts — La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League — inevitably intensifies.

What’s Next

For now, Rodri is a Barcelona player, and by all early accounts he has settled quickly under Flick at Spotify Camp Nou. That makes him not just a miss in the abstract sense, but a very real and present obstacle in El Clásico showdowns to come this season. Facing a Rodri-anchored Barcelona midfield is a prospect that will demand a tactical response from Mourinho’s side.

For Real Madrid fans, the silver lining — if there is one — is knowing that the club fought hard, that Florentino Pérez clearly identified the right target, and that the recruitment department is thinking at the very highest level. The next challenge is finding the answer in a market where elite midfield talent of that profile rarely becomes available. One door closed this summer. The Bernabéu will be hoping the next one opens soon.
