Thibaut Courtois Sidelined for Six Weeks

It was a bittersweet Tuesday night for Madridistas. While we celebrated a thrilling 2-1 victory over Manchester City to seal a dominant 5-1 aggregate win and secure our spot in the Champions League quarterfinals, it came at a massive cost. Our Belgian wall, Thibaut Courtois, is set to be sidelined for approximately six weeks.

Courtois had to be replaced by Andriy Lunin for the second half of the clash after sustaining a thigh injury. While Vinícius Júnior stole the show with his crucial two goals to sink City, the post-match focus quickly shifted to our number one.

The Medical Verdict

Real Madrid released an official statement on Thursday confirming our worst fears:

“Following tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. His recovery will be monitored.”

Crucial Fixtures Missed

The timing of this injury could not be worse for Álvaro Arbeloa and the squad. Losing a talismanic figure like Courtois is a heavy blow, especially considering the gauntlet of fixtures approaching.

If sidelined for the full six weeks, Courtois will miss up to seven games across all competitions. Most notably, he is officially ruled out of:

With Real currently sitting four points behind Barcelona in the LaLiga title race, Arbeloa will have to put his full faith in Lunin to hold down the fort. The ultimate goal is to have Courtois fully recovered and back in the starting XI for the crucial El Clásico trip to Camp Nou on May 10.

Rivals Catch a Break

To add a little salt to the wound, our rivals in Catalonia caught a lucky break this week. Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García suffered an injury scare during their 7-2 win over Newcastle United and had to be replaced by Wojciech Szczesny. However, Barca confirmed on Thursday that medical tests showed no serious injury, clearing García to play against Rayo Vallecano this Sunday.

For now, it’s time for the squad to rally behind Lunin.
