Madridistas, brace yourselves. Just when we thought our injury luck this season couldn’t get any worse, the club has confirmed our worst fears regarding Rodrygo.
Following Monday’s deeply frustrating 1-0 home La Liga defeat to Getafe, Real Madrid released a medical report on Tuesday that no fan ever wants to read. Tests have confirmed that our Brazilian winger has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right leg.
The injury occurred after Rodrygo came on as a substitute against Getafe. While he bravely stayed on the pitch until the final whistle, Tuesday’s scans revealed the severe reality of the damage. This is an especially bitter pill to swallow given that the 25-year-old had only just battled back from a month-long layoff due to tendonitis.
What This Means for Alvaro Arbeloa’s Madrid
The timing is absolutely brutal. Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa is now facing a full-blown attacking crisis right when the stakes are highest.
With French superstar Kylian Mbappe currently sidelined due to a knee sprain, our frontline is looking incredibly thin. Looking ahead to next week’s monumental Champions League last-16 clash against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu, Arbeloa currently has only three fully fit attackers at his disposal:
- Vinicius Junior
- Gonzalo Garcia
- Franco Mastantuono
Vini Jr. will undoubtedly have to carry a massive burden on his shoulders, while our young talents, Garcia and Mastantuono, will be thrust into the spotlight and asked to deliver on European football’s biggest stage.
International Heartbreak
The heartbreak extends beyond the Spanish capital. The severity of the injury means Rodrygo will officially miss this summer’s World Cup in the United States.
It’s a massive blow for the player and for his former club manager, Carlo Ancelotti, who will now be without one of his most dynamic forwards as Brazil chases a record sixth World Cup trophy.
Recovery for an ACL and meniscus tear is notoriously grueling, but if anyone has the resilience to bounce back stronger, it’s Rodrygo. We wish him a swift and successful recovery. ¡Ánimo, Rodrygo!
