The Derby Awaits: Time for Real Madrid to Prove Themselves

After a shaky start to 2026 that saw back-to-back league defeats to Osasuna and Getafe, our season looked like it was faltering. But if there’s one thing we know about Real Madrid, it’s that this club thrives when the lights are brightest. Dispatching Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League Last 16 as underdogs—culminating in that glorious 2-1 win in Manchester—was the jolt of electricity this campaign desperately needed.

Now, Alvaro Arbeloa’s men face another monumental task this Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu: Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

The Consistency Conundrum

The talent in our squad is undeniable, but the watchword right now is consistency. As Kylian Mbappe pointed out after that tough night in Lisbon back in January, “We can’t be good one day and then the next day not, that’s not what a champion team does.” Under Xabi Alonso, and initially under Arbeloa, week-to-week reliability was our Achilles’ heel. However, the tide seems to be turning. Our 3-0 demolition of City at the Bernabeu was easily our best performance of the season, achieved mostly through incredible team synergy.

Vini Jr: Silencing the Doubters

Let’s talk about our star boy, Vinicius Junior.

The 25-year-old has had a rollercoaster season, taking the brunt of the criticism during our 16-game rut earlier in the campaign. But his brace in Manchester was poetic justice. It assuaged fears of a dipping form and, more importantly, it silenced the Premier League fans who mocked him with that Ballon d’Or banner last season.

Vini said it best: “Football is good for that, it always gives you another chance.” The Bernabeu is fully behind him again, and he looks primed to terrorize Atleti’s backline.

The Tactical Dilemma: Vini, Mbappe, and the Press

Sunday brings a fascinating tactical question for Arbeloa: Can Vini Jr and Mbappe start together without sacrificing our work rate?

Against Man City, we looked phenomenal as a unified pressing machine. Players like Brahim Diaz and Arda Guler stepped up massively in the dirty work—aspects of the game that Mbappe sometimes shuns. With Mbappe returning from his knee sprain, Arbeloa has to find the perfect balance to ensure our defensive structure doesn’t crumble against Atletico’s counter-attacks.

The La Liga Title Race Picture

We are currently four points behind Hansi Flick’s high-flying Barcelona. With Barca hosting Rayo Vallecano earlier on Sunday, we could be stepping onto the Bernabeu pitch with a seven-point gap to close.

Why we have the edge on Sunday:

If we want to head into the international break ready to mount a serious title charge—and prepare for Bayern Munich in the UCL quarter-finals—a statement win against our cross-town rivals is non-negotiable.
