It’s official: Vinícius Júnior is staying at Real Madrid. The club confirmed on Thursday that the Brazilian has signed a new six-year contract extending his stay through June 30, 2032 — a deal that closes the book on nearly 19 months of on-off negotiations and a summer that had genuinely threatened to end with him leaving.
From stalemate to signature
His previous deal had been set to expire in the summer of 2027, and talks had been deadlocked for much of the past year over money. Vinícius had reportedly been asking for a package close to €30 million a year — parity with Kylian Mbappé — up from the roughly €17.5 million he’d been earning in the final year of his old contract. The breakthrough came this week: Real Madrid’s representatives, including director general José Ángel Sánchez and chief scout Juni Calafat, met with Vinícius’s camp on Wednesday and presented an improved offer worth around €22 million a year, with some Spanish outlets citing figures as high as €24-25 million once the full package is factored in. That was enough to get the deal done.
According to Fabrizio Romano, both sides had wanted this outcome all along — Vinícius always preferred to stay, and Pérez always viewed him as central to the project — with José Mourinho reportedly playing a significant personal role in helping push the negotiation to a close.
What the club said
Real Madrid’s official statement described Vinícius as one of the most important players of one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. Since arriving from Flamengo in 2018 at age 18, he’s made 375 appearances, scored 128 goals, and won 14 trophies, including two Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles, three Club World Cups, and a Copa del Rey — with pivotal contributions in each of Real Madrid’s last two Champions League final wins, in Paris in 2022 and London in 2024. He’s also collected individual honors including the 2024 FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award. Vinícius posted his own message on Instagram, describing his eight years at the Bernabéu as having flown by and pledging himself to six more — and beyond.
Arsenal miss out
The extension ends a serious push from Arsenal, who had grown genuinely hopeful of landing Vinícius as a statement signing after his contract talks with Madrid stalled earlier in the summer. Reports suggest Arsenal would have accelerated their interest further had he turned Madrid’s terms down, but with the deal now signed, the Premier League champions will have to look elsewhere for a left-sided attacking addition.
A big day for Real Madrid overall
The timing is notable: the announcement landed the same day Real Madrid confirmed the record deal for Yan Diomandé, worth up to €140 million. It wasn’t universally good news in Madrid, though — ESPN also reported today that Rodri has reportedly given Barcelona the green light to pursue him, a potentially serious blow to Real Madrid’s other big midfield target this summer.
RMxtra Verdict
Locking down Vinícius through the peak years of his career, on the same day the club broke its transfer record for Diomandé, is about as strong a statement of intent as Real Madrid could make this summer. The Rodri twist is a reminder the transfer window is far from finished — but on the Vinícius question at least, the uncertainty is over.
