Mbappé Eyes Villarreal Return But Knee Still the Decider

Mbappé Eyes Villarreal Return But Knee Still the Decider

The question every Madridista wants answered right now is simple: will Kylian Mbappé be fit for Saturday? As of Monday 6 October, the answer is a cautious, carefully-worded maybe — and that’s exactly how Real Madrid are playing it.

What We Know

Mbappé was back at Valdebebas on Monday 5 October, putting in an individual rehabilitation session as he continues to work his way back from a left-knee injury. According to Managing Madrid, the session covered gym work, physiotherapy, and pitch-based activity both with and without the ball — a meaningful step forward, but not the green light fans are hoping for.

Crucially, Madrid’s official update stopped well short of saying Mbappé has rejoined full group training or been cleared to feature against Villarreal on Saturday 10 October. The club confirmed he is targeting that fixture — but there’s a world of difference between a target and a selection decision. His availability will be determined by how his knee continues to respond to training loads in the days ahead.

The injury itself was picked up in the most bittersweet of circumstances. Mbappé suffered the knock while scoring the winning goal for France against Turkey on 25 September — the kind of moment that makes the subsequent fitness scare all the more frustrating. He returned to Madrid the following day for examination, and the club confirmed he had sustained a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee. No recovery timeline was given at the time, though early reports suggested an absence of 10 to 12 days, which would place the Villarreal game right at the edge of that window.

What It Means for Real Madrid

Saturday’s home match against Villarreal is far from the only reason Madrid need their talisman back. October is absolutely stacked. After Villarreal, Los Blancos travel to Roma on 14 October, host Sevilla on 18 October, and then face RB Leipzig in the Champions League on 21 October — before the season’s biggest domestic occasion, the Clásico at Barcelona on 25 October. That is a five-game stretch in 15 days that will go a long way to shaping how Madrid’s season is remembered.

Mbappé missing even part of that run would be a significant blow. Since arriving at the Bernabéu, the Frenchman has been Madrid’s most dangerous forward — the kind of player opponents build their defensive plans around. Without him, Carlo Ancelotti has options, but none quite carry the same game-changing threat. Rodrygo, interestingly, is also named among the players continuing their own recovery programmes alongside Mbappé, Raúl Asencio, Ibrahima Konaté, Ferland Mendy, and Fede Valverde. None of those six were given confirmed return dates in Monday’s update — so Madrid’s injury picture heading into this month is notably congested.

It’s also worth remembering that a return to individual training — and even a return to group training — doesn’t automatically mean Mbappé is ready to start. Madrid’s medical team will want to see how his knee holds up under match-intensity conditions before committing him to 90 minutes. A substitute appearance on Saturday, if he is deemed fit at all, might be the more likely scenario to begin with.

What’s Next

The next few training sessions at Valdebebas are the ones that will truly tell the story. If Mbappé progresses to full group work by Wednesday or Thursday, the door to a place in the squad — even a bench role — opens considerably. If he pulls up short or the medical staff decide the risk isn’t worth it with the Roma trip and the Clásico looming, Madrid will be cautious and keep him wrapped in cotton wool for another week.

For now, Madridistas will be watching every training update out of Valdebebas with the kind of intensity usually reserved for matchdays themselves. The fact that Mbappé is back on the grass and working with the ball is genuinely encouraging news. Whether it’s enough to get him on that pitch against Villarreal on Saturday — that’s the call that’s still to come.
