Valverde Equals Pirri’s Record: The Only Two Real Madrid Midfielders with a European Cup Hat-Trick

What a night at the Bernabéu! If there was ever any doubt about Federico Valverde’s place in the pantheon of Real Madrid greats, his unforgettable performance against Manchester City has put it to rest. Our Uruguayan powerhouse didn’t just lead us to a spectacular 3-0 victory in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16; he wrote his name into the history books.

With his breathtaking first-half hat-trick, the captain became only the second Real Madrid midfielder to score three goals in a single European Cup match. He now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the absolute greatest legends of our club: our honorary president, José Martínez Pirri.

Echoes of 1968

To understand the magnitude of Valverde’s achievement, we have to look back over 50 years. Pirri achieved this exact feat on September 18, 1968, in a 6-0 thrashing of AEL Limassol during the first round of the European Cup. Pirri struck twice early in the first half (11’ and 14’) and secured his third in the 62nd minute.

Fast forward to a spectacular European night against a star-studded Manchester City side, and Valverde channeled that exact same ruthless energy.

A 22-Minute Masterclass

Valverde was nothing short of stellar. City started with high intensity, but they were completely undone by El Halcón’s brilliance in a 22-minute window:

Three goals, three moments of sheer magic, and a commanding 3-0 lead to take to the Etihad for the second leg. This is what the Champions League is all about. This is what Real Madrid is all about.
