With his breathtaking first-half hat-trick, the captain became only the second Real Madrid midfielder to score three goals in a single European Cup match. He now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the absolute greatest legends of our club: our honorary president, José Martínez Pirri.
Echoes of 1968
To understand the magnitude of Valverde’s achievement, we have to look back over 50 years. Pirri achieved this exact feat on September 18, 1968, in a 6-0 thrashing of AEL Limassol during the first round of the European Cup. Pirri struck twice early in the first half (11’ and 14’) and secured his third in the 62nd minute.

- 20th Minute: The masterclass began against the run of play. Thibaut Courtois launched a brilliant long pass down the pitch. Valverde capitalized, bypassed Nico O’Reilly, calmly rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma, and slotted it home from a tight angle.
- 27th Minute: Just seven minutes later, he struck again. Fede unleashed a powerful left-footed strike across the box that left Donnarumma with no chance.
- 43rd Minute: He saved the absolute best for last. To complete his brilliant performance, Valverde flicked the ball cleanly over Marc Guéhi and delivered a flawless right-footed volley to seal his first professional hat-trick before the halftime whistle even blew.
