Alexander-Arnold Cites “Embedded Expectation” as Real Madrid Oust Manchester City from Champions League

Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League semi-finals following a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate victory over a 10-man Manchester City on Tuesday evening, driven by a brace from Vinícius Júnior and a staunch defensive performance.

The 15-time European champions capitalized on a disastrous turning point for Pep Guardiola’s side. Manchester City’s already difficult task was compounded when Bernardo Silva was issued a red card for a deliberate handball. The infraction resulted in a penalty, which Vinícius confidently converted.

The Brazilian forward later added a close-range finish to secure the victory, rendering Erling Haaland’s strike for City a mere consolation.

For Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who recently marked his 25th appearance for the club, the victory underscores the unique pressures and standards at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“There’s an expectation at Real Madrid to go far in the Champions League and win it. It’s embedded in the identity of the club,” Alexander-Arnold told Amazon Prime following the match. “We thrive off the expectation and it brings the best out of us.”

The England international, who acknowledged a challenging initial transition to Spain due to fitness setbacks, expressed satisfaction in eliminating his former Premier League rivals. “It was nice to get one over Manchester City, they’ve snatched a few medals from me at Liverpool. You know going up against Manchester City is always going to be tough, so we’re proud of the performance,” he added.

Vinícius Júnior’s two goals elevated his total Champions League goal involvements against Manchester City to eight (four goals, four assists). He now trails only Lionel Messi, who has nine, in total goal contributions against the English club in the competition.

The match was not without controversy. After scoring a subsequent goal that was ultimately ruled offside, Vinícius celebrated emphatically in front of the visiting Manchester City supporters. The forward later clarified that his actions were a direct response to a banner displayed by the traveling fans mocking his second-place finish at the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

“The last time we came here, the Manchester City fans were making fun of me,” Vinícius stated. “I wasn’t disrespecting City fans, but it was a way for me to prove myself to them.”

Under the tactical guidance of manager Álvaro Arbeloa, Real Madrid showcased a deep squad performance. Alexander-Arnold specifically highlighted the contributions of veteran midfielder Federico Valverde and academy graduate Thiago Pitarch, noting that “big players step up on the big stage.”

While Los Blancos currently sit four points adrift in the LaLiga title race, their European pedigree remains largely unquestioned as they prepare for the semi-final draw
