Iker Casillas has never been far from controversy during his post-playing days on social media, but his latest move has genuinely blindsided the Madridista faithful. On Wednesday, the Real Madrid and Spain legend shared — or more precisely, reposted — a video that takes clear aim at his former Bernabéu teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, all while heaping praise on Lionel Messi. Safe to say, the reaction online was immediate and fierce.
What Happened
The backdrop to all of this is a week in which the eternal Messi vs. Ronaldo argument has roared back to life louder than ever. Ronaldo had walked out of the Portuguese national team camp following a reported fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus — a story that dominated headlines and handed his critics fresh ammunition. Meanwhile, Messi was given a farewell from the Argentine national setup that could only be described as regal, with supporters and pundits alike using the moment to argue, once again, that the Argentine is the greatest footballer to have ever lived.
Into that charged atmosphere stepped Casillas. Coming across a social media post that lambasted Ronaldo over his recent conduct and record while celebrating Messi, the former goalkeeper didn’t just scroll past — he hit repost, amplifying the message to his enormous following. The repost was flagged publicly by the account @AlbicelesteTalk on X (formerly Twitter), which posted: “Iker Casillas retweeted this video” along with the clip itself. That was all it took for the football world to take notice.
Why This Stings for Real Madrid Fans
Let’s be honest — this one hurts a bit more than your average Messi-Ronaldo social media spat, and here’s why. Iker Casillas isn’t just any former teammate of Ronaldo’s. He is, by almost any measure, one of the greatest figures in Real Madrid’s entire history. Five La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, and — most painfully relevant given Ronaldo’s famous contributions — three UEFA Champions League winners’ medals, all earned while wearing the white of Madrid. The man in goal for so many of those iconic nights. For a figure of that stature to publicly amplify content mocking CR7, it feels like a betrayal of something bigger than just one player.
Casillas and Ronaldo shared a dressing room at the Bernabéu for several seasons during one of the most successful eras in the club’s modern history. Their time together produced Champions League glory, domestic dominance, and some of the most memorable nights in European football. Whatever has gone on between them privately, seeing that history dismissed — even indirectly — through a social media repost is not something supporters are going to brush off easily.
It’s also worth noting that Casillas has, over the years since his playing days ended, occasionally courted controversy with his online activity. This is not entirely uncharted territory for him. But the timing here, with Ronaldo already under fire following the Portugal camp walkout, makes it feel particularly pointed.
What It Means Going Forward
In a purely football sense, this changes nothing at the Bernabéu. Ronaldo has long since moved on from Madrid, and the current squad under Carlo Ancelotti — or whoever may be at the helm in this moment — has its own battles to fight in La Liga and the Champions League. But moments like these matter to the culture of the club, to the sense of brotherhood that Madridistas take enormous pride in.
There will be those who argue Casillas is entitled to his opinion and that a repost is a relatively minor act. There will be others — probably the majority reading this — who feel a Real Madrid legend of his standing should know better than to pile on a man who gave this club nine seasons, over 400 goals, and four Champions League trophies. The debate, as always with anything touching on Messi vs. Ronaldo, is unlikely to die down quickly. And with Casillas now in the mix, it just got a whole lot more personal for the Madridista community.
