Bernardo Silva has officially begun his Real Madrid career, completing his first training session at Valdebebas after arriving on a free transfer following the expiry of his Manchester City contract. The move came at José Mourinho’s personal request, and fans turned out to greet the Portuguese playmaker as he arrived for his medical, gathering for autographs and photos as videos of his welcome spread across social media.
A special first day
Speaking to Real Madrid’s in-house media afterward, Silva said arriving at the club felt genuinely special, adding that the club’s history speaks for itself and that he simply wants to help continue its winning tradition. He admitted the first session — his introduction to a Mourinho pre-season — left him drained, but said meeting his new teammates made it worthwhile, noting he already knew many of them well from years of facing them as an opponent. The training ground, he said, already feels like home.
Finally on the same side as Mourinho
Silva also reflected on working under Mourinho for the first time after years of being a rival. He described the Portuguese coach as someone who has meant a great deal to Portuguese football since his own childhood, and said he’s eager to learn from him now that they’re finally on the same side. It’s a reunion of sorts between compatriots: Mourinho was reportedly the driving factor behind Silva choosing Madrid this summer, and the two have signed off on a two-year contract with an option for a further extension.
Real Madrid’s tactical wild card
Silva’s versatility is central to why Mourinho wanted him. He’s comfortable as a deep-lying midfielder, an attacking midfielder, or out on the right, and AS reports the coaching staff haven’t yet settled on a fixed position for him — for now, he’s being used as a tactical joker rather than a set piece of the team plan. Silva echoed that himself, saying he sees himself as a team player who tries to make those around him better, and that he’ll be ready for whatever role Real Madrid needs from him.
It’s a slight departure from Real Madrid’s usual recruitment profile — Silva turns 32 next week, well outside the age range the club typically targets — but Mourinho reportedly values the composure and big-game experience he brings just as much as his technical range.
Why he said yes
Having faced Real Madrid many times over his career, Silva said he’d always felt the scale of the club and the weight of playing at the Bernabéu, and that turning the move down was never really an option once it was offered. Being closer to family and to Portugal, in a culture he described as similar to home, only added to the appeal — on top of what he called the privilege of joining the club with the most trophies in the game.
Asked about the players who shaped him, Silva named Zinedine Zidane, Rui Costa, and Luka Modrić as his biggest influences, praising Modrić in particular not just for his football but for the way he carries himself off the pitch.
RMxtra Verdict
Silva arrives off the back of a difficult World Cup with Portugal, who exited early with him mostly on the bench behind Bruno Fernandes, João Neves, and Vitinha. A fresh start at Real Madrid — and a coach he’s admired since childhood — gives him a genuine chance to reset heading into what could be one of the more unpredictable midfields in Europe this season.
