The sweeping administrative overhaul at Valdebebas has just hit an unexpected roadblock, and this time, it’s coming directly from the manager’s office. While the blockbuster arrivals of Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, and Denzel Dumfries have set up an inevitable summer clear-out of fringe players, José Mourinho has pulled the emergency brake on one highly anticipated departure.
According to transfer insider Matteo Moretto, via Madrid Zone, Mourinho has officially instructed the Real Madrid board to freeze all ongoing exit negotiations for academy graduate Gonzalo García.
The 21-year-old striker was widely considered a lock to leave the Santiago Bernabéu this window following a deeply frustrating, stagnant 2025/26 campaign under both Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa. Despite launching his name into the global spotlight with electric, breakthrough performances during last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, Gonzalo found senior minutes impossible to come by as the previous coaching staffs leaned on established veterans.
The Mourinho Pre-Season Audit
Up until Mourinho’s sudden intervention, Real Madrid’s sporting department was deep in talks with an absolute army of suitors. Clubs across Spain, England, Germany, and Italy have been actively vying for the forward’s signature, with Madrid preparing to sanction a formula structuralized around their traditional 50% sell-on and buyback clause matrix.
However, “The Special One” has thrown those plans directly into the shredder.
The Tactical Evaluation: Mourinho has communicated to Florentino Pérez that he views Gonzalo as a “very unique, interesting profile” that possesses specific physical and stylistic traits missing from the senior team. The manager wants the academy product entirely present for the upcoming pre-season tour to thoroughly analyze his tactical ceiling before authorizing any movement.
The Dilemma: Can Gonzalo Actually Break Through?
While Mourinho’s personal backing is a massive psychological boost for the homegrown talent, the cold reality of Real Madrid’s frontline gridlock remains completely unchanged. If Gonzalo chooses to fight for his spot in the capital, the mathematical mountain he has to climb is steep:
- The Undisputed Anchor: Kylian Mbappé remains the absolute, untouchable apex predator in the No. 9 position.
- The Returning Prodigy: As we reported earlier this week, Pérez and Mourinho have already completely slammed the door on Inter Milan’s €40 million pursuit of Endrick. The 19-year-old is returning from his highly successful, 16-goal-contribution loan spell at Lyon with a mandate to challenge for heavy first-team minutes.
- The Galáctico Shadow: With the board simultaneously laying the financial groundwork for a record-shattering €220 million blitz for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, space in the final third is at an absolute premium.
RMxtra Verdict: A Win-Win for the Starlet
Freeing up Gonzalo’s exit talks is a classic, calculated Mourinho power move. It sends an immediate message to the underperforming senior dressing room that academy players will get a clean slate based entirely on merit, while allowing the manager to look under the hood of his developmental squad without spending a dime of the transfer budget.
For Gonzalo, this pre-season is the ultimate high-stakes audition. If he can display the lethal finishing and pressing intensity that Mourinho demands from his central strikers, he could easily carve out a role as a specialized tactical weapon off the bench during a grueling 60-plus match season. If the logjam proves too dense, his stock will have only risen by training directly under Mourinho’s watch, ensuring an even bigger market awaits him in August.
